How to choose the right oil for a scooter

Three factors to check on an oil bottle before purchasing: SAE viscosity grade, API performance standard, and JASO clutch standard.

Many users choose oil based on habit or price, while simply reading the three correct parameters on the label is enough to avoid most mistakes.

1. SAE viscosity grade. Given Vietnam's climate, standard scooters are suitable for 10W-30 or 10W-40. The number before the W indicates cold-start capability, while the number after represents viscosity at operating temperature.

2. API standard. Symbols starting with the letter S are for gasoline engines. API SL, SM, SN - the further the second letter is in the alphabet, the higher the performance requirement.

3. JASO standard. This is the most important difference between manual and automatic motorcycles. Scooters use a dry clutch, so choose JASO MB; manual and clutch motorcycles use a wet clutch and must use JASO MA or MA2 to avoid clutch slippage.

Using JASO MA oil for scooters will reduce fuel efficiency; conversely, using JASO MB for manual motorcycles can cause clutch slippage when accelerating.

Finally, adhere to the oil change interval recommended by the manufacturer - usually 2,000 km for city driving.
